Blacks are 20% more likely to experience serious mental health problems than the general population. This could be explained by a hesitance to seek care until they are in crisis. This may be due to combination of microagressions that eventually merge and create breakdowns from the lack of being able to express responses or feelings externally. Here are some of th factors that put African Americans at risk for mental health problems:

  • Collective Trauma happens as a result of dealing with
slavery  and genocide, and transferring the pain to the
    next generation.

  • Historical Trauma is made up of collective trauma due
to a long history of prejudice and unfavorable societal
treatment of African Americans in the United States.

  • Cultural trauma is often described as a collective
traumatic event (e.g., slavery) that leaves permanent
and enduring memories in the consciousness.

In spite of progress, the legacy of slavery has been carried

forward in many areas of American society, including the

racially related injustices that persist, such as mass

incarceration, and the lethal violence directed disproportionately toward African Americans. Intergenerational trauma remains unresolved within the community. The massive historical trauma of slavery continues to shape the lives of individual children, families, communities, and the systems with which they interact. Such acknowledgement requires self-examination, self-awareness, overcoming the challenges of open communication on these issues.

Mass Integration wants to help you overcome the trauma in your life that came before you and cope with personal traumas that you have endured in your life. People who have experienced trauma often find themselves avoiding. people, avoiding attention, avoiding intimacy, avoiding feelings, or avoiding anything that could remind them at all about the trauma.  Avoidance keeps you "safe". Avoidance keeps you from the unknown. But avoidance also keeps you from living and fully embracing what the world has to offer you and what you can offer the world.

Healthy hearts wants to build self-love primarily. When you truly love yourself, your life transforms. Saying "I love myself" everyday, silently or not, will slowly eat away at the shame and trauma that has been holding you back. Love is a decision. Therefore, you must choose to love yourself no matter what has occurred in the past and how you currently feel about yourself. Sterotypes and prejudice may exist, but you still deserve to love and accept yourself unconditionally. Let's take this journey together.
